Club Mission Statement
The SBDC is dedicated to encouraging social dancing, the social etiquette and fun that accompany it, and providing basic dance instruction to its members. The SBDC provides a safe and drug and alcohol free dance environment. Membership Membership is open to UCSB students, faculty, staff, or the general Santa Barbara Community who have an interest in Swing or Ballroom dancing. Members may submit ideas and volunteer their help at club events. $20 per academic quarter (approx. 3 months) Summer Quarter—No Fees First visit to the club is FREE. A Major Dance Event with live music is usually held in Robertson Gym or the Student Resource Buildings Multi-Purpose Room. These dances typically have themes, and may be semi-formal, big-band, or other special event with an introductory dance lesson (swing or ballroom) prior to the start of the dance. The band breaks are often highlighted by special invited guest dance exhibitions or dance performances.
Specialty Dance Workshops occurs once or twice each quarter and feature professional dance instructors who teach their specialty dance steps, from Swing and Lindy Hop, to Latin and Smooth Ballroom. The SBDC often features quality dance instructors that can be found locally in the Santa Barbara community. Weekly Club Practice Meetings
Each meeting typically includes a 45 minute Introductory lesson, announcements, mixers, followed by open dance practice. For the more advanced dancers, the SBDC offers practice time to improve dance styling and technique that is supervised by the officers of the SBDC, and by invited guest helpers. Throughout the school quarter a variety of other events and activities will be planned from Valentine’s Day Fundraiser, Informal DJ dances, Crazy Hat Night, Pajama Party, Dancing in Storke Plaza, 50’s Sock Hop to Pizza and Dance History Video Night. These events are typically free for members.
Our SBDC Members Incentive Award Winners!Every quarter, the SBDC Officers recognize individual members who have provided extra special support to the club, whether by helping setup and cleanup after meetings or events, participating in club performances, helping at an SBDC booth for a UCSB event, or assisting in other ways.
