DANCE ETIQUETTE TIPS OF THE WEEK

01. Don't be embarrassed about asking someone to dance if you are a beginner dancer.  Remember that everyone started out as a beginner dancer at some time!

02.  Social Dancing is not the same as performance dancing or competition dancing.  While social dancing, be kind to your partner, and those dancing around you, and save the "show-off" steps for performances, "jam circles", or competitions!

03.  Leaders should choose the correct dance style lead that matches the music (and your partner)!   Remember that there is no one "correct" dance style that fits ALL types of music. (i.e.: You should NOT lead the "Charleston" while a "Waltz" is playing!)

04. Even your closest friends will hesitate to discuss hygiene problems with you. So we will just tell everyone: clean up before you go to a dance. Brush your teeth, use a breath mint, use deodorant, and take a towel and perhaps a change of clothing with you.

05.  Social dancing is a semi-intimate activity that requires a certain degree of physical closeness. Good hygiene before and during the dance shows respect and consideration for the other dancers.

06.  It's a good idea to wash your hands well after dancing, especially before eating. This will help reduce the spread of colds and other illnesses.

07. Unless someone asks you directly to make a correction, you should never volunteer criticisms of your social dance partner's technique. You should realize that your dance partner is doing the best that he or she can. And if things are not working out well, the duration of the song is only a few minutes, so just tough it out.

08. It's OK to look presentable!  Give some thought to what you are going to wear before going out to a social dance.

09. Consider purchasing a pair of dance shoes if you plan to go out dancing on a regular basis. Dance shoes will not only make you look better while you are dancing, but will also help you turn and move better on the dance floor. Good dance shoes may also help protect your feet by providing critical arch and heel support.

10. Common courtesy should be followed while dancing. If you bump into someone, or step on someone, you should immediately apologize, and then move on.
