Dances and Workshops
Rob and Diane Van Haaren Dance Workshop
A Major Dance Event with live music is usually held in Robertson Gym or the Student Resource Buildings Multi-Purpose Room. These dances typically have themes, and may be semi-formal, big-band, or other special event with an introductory dance lesson (swing or ballroom) prior to the start of the dance. The band breaks are often highlighted by special invited guest dance exhibitions or dance performances.
Specialty Dance Workshops occurs once or twice each quarter and feature professional dance instructors who teach their specialty dance steps, from Swing and Lindy Hop, to Latin and Smooth Ballroom. The SBDC often features quality dance instructors that can be found locally in the Santa Barbara community. We have also brought outstanding masters of dance from Los Angeles, and as far away as Stockholm, Sweden!

Hugely Successful: SBDC “1950’s Sock Hop and Swing Dance Party” Saturday April 26th, 2014!
We would like to thank the hundreds of UCSB Students and all of the dancers of the Santa Barbara community for attending and supporting our recent "1950’s Sock Hop and Swing Dance Party” on Saturday April 26th at UCSB (A Totally Free Event!) The dance was enormously successful beyond everyone’s expectations! CAPTAIN CARDIAC and The CORONARIES played extra-inspired for us, (even leading us into a building-long Conga Line!) with an evening of 1950’s and 1960’s Swing and Rock and Roll for the 350+ dancers in attendance. It turns out that 2 of the band member are UCSB alumni, and this was their first time playing at their alma-mater! Go Gauchos!
We would like to especially thank and acknowledge all of the people and organizations that had a hand in putting on such a huge and successful event. From the UCSB AS Finance Board and OSL After Dark program (and your SBDC) for providing funding for the event, to the UCSB Department of Recreation – Leisure Review Program for co-sponsoring the event, to the Classic Car owners for providing their Classic Cars for the evening, to the UCSB Vocal Motion singing group for providing half-time entertainment, to Cal Taco for providing the 1950’s burgers, to all of the businesses and organizations who donated gift certificates and gift cards for us to use as prizes, to all of the SBDC Officers and helpers, and especially to you the dancing audience, we say THANK YOU!!

Hugely Successful: SBDC “Swinging Hearts Swing Dance” Saturday February 15th, 2014
We would like to thank the dancers of the Santa Barbara community for attending and supporting our recent "Swinging Hearts Swing Dance" over Valentine’s Weekend at UCSB (a free event). The dance was a huge success beyond all of our expectations. The Crown City Bombers played a truly inspired evening of 1950's Swing, Rock-and-Roll, Rockabilly, and Rhythm and Blues tunes for the enjoyment of the 250+ dancers in attendance. Hundreds of UCSB Students were attending their first-ever live band Swing Dance event, and most stuck around until the band ended, after midnight.
We would also like to especially thank and acknowledge the special "Swinging Hearts Swing Dance" half-time entertainers. The UCSB "Raices" performance group provided a truly authentic Mexican Folkloric dance appropriate for Valentine's Day, and the duo of Brian Griffin and wife, Rachel, performed an exciting pair of Argentine Tango dance exhibitions for us.
Our dance could not have taken place without the co-sponsorship of the UCSB Recreation Department - Leisure Review Program, and funding was provided by the UCSB Associated Students Finance Board.
A special SBDC "Thank You" also goes out to the SBDC Club Officers for organizing and helping to run the event, and especially Juanita Hernandez for the refreshments (yum!).
So, if you enjoyed the just completed SBDC "Swinging Heart Swing Dance", you should save the date, Saturday April 26th, and come to our next (free) Swing Dance event, a "1950's Sock Hop Swing Dance Party" featuring Captain Cardiac and The Coronaries!! This should be a fantastic evening of 1950's dancing, food, decorations, and entertainment. We will also have a digital photo booth and a Classic Car display. Details and flyers will be available soon.
See Photos below from The "Swinging Hearts Swing Dance", 2/15/2014.
